Baker Street Companions
Mention Baker Street in London to anyone around the world and the chances are that the first thing they’ll think of is Sherlock Holmes. You don’t have to be a brilliant detective to deduce that there’s much more to this part of London than a fictional character, however, as both Baker Street itself and the surrounding area contain the kind of attractions which draw millions of visitors to the city every year.
When the Sherlock Holmes stories were written, the address ‘221B Baker Street’ didn’t actually exist, and wasn’t created in reality until the street was extended in the 1930’s. Now the address is marked by a blue plaque and is home to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Baker Street as a whole is located in the Marylebone district close to the centre of London, and runs from Regents Park in the north to Portman Square in the south.
Baker Street is one of the busiest streets in London, with attractions such as the afore-mentioned Sherlock Holmes Museum and Madame Tussauds, with its stunningly life like wax models of celebrities, politicians and other well know figures, attracting visitors from all over the world. There’s much more to Baker Street than simply these attractions, however. The architecture of the street itself is a mixture of old and new, with many of the 19th century townhouses now revamped as retail outlets, bars, cafes and restaurants.
A large part of the appeal of Baker Street is the fact that many of the amenities of central London, such as the boutique shops of Marylebone and the nightlife and culture of the west end are within easy walking distance. If you wish to travel slightly further afield, Baker Street is well served by transport links. Baker Street tube station, as well as providing access to the Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City, Circle and Metropolitan lines, has an important historical significance, being open of the oldest surviving underground train stations in the world, whilst Baker Street itself is served by numerous bus routes serving all parts of the rest of London.
In terms of fresh air and fun, Baker Street is particularly well served, being just minutes away from Regents Park. This is one of the most famous royal parks in London and, as well as offering 410 acres of wide open green space it is home to a host of activities. London Zoo can be found here, as can an open air theatre, Regents Canal, a boating lake and a range of sports facilities.
